A robust lizard with a long tail covered in prominent keeled scales, giving it a spiny appearance. The back has a crest of long spines. Personality what they are like

Wild-caught specimens can be defensive and may bite or lash with the tail when cornered. However, captive-born-and-bred Mexican spiny-tailed iguanas often tame down well with gentle, regular handling and hand-feeding. They can become quite calm and inquisitive, making rewarding pets. Some individuals remain flighty and are better suited as display animals.43

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Diurnal and active. They need ample space to climb and bask. A large enclosure (at least 4 feet long for adults, larger for bigger species) with branches and basking shelves is essential. They enjoy exploring and will use vertical space.45

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Low grooming needs. Provide a shallow water dish for drinking and soaking. Spot-clean the enclosure daily and perform a full clean regularly. Shedding is normal; ensure humidity is adequate to aid shedding.4

Home where they are happiest

A large, well-ventilated enclosure (minimum 4 feet long by 2 feet wide by 2.5 feet tall for an adult). Provide a basking spot reaching 95-105°F, with ambient temperatures of 75-85°F. Full-spectrum UVB lighting is essential, placed within 10 inches of basking areas. Use a substrate such as reptile carpet or paper. Include hiding spots, climbing branches, and a shallow water dish. Outdoor enclosures are ideal in warm climates.45

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Adults are primarily herbivorous: feed a variety of dark leafy greens, shredded vegetables, edible flowers (hibiscus, dandelion), and occasional fruit. Juveniles need insects (crickets, worms) as the main part of their diet, gradually shifting to more plant matter as they grow. Dust food with calcium and vitamin supplements two to three times a week.43

Company who they like around

Mexican spiny-tailed iguanas are social and can live in groups, unlike some other Ctenosaura species. However, males may become territorial, so housing a single or a pair is often best. They are not venomous and are legal to keep in most places, but check local regulations as they are an introduced species in parts of the USA.34

The story where it all began

Native to western Mexico and Central America, the Mexican spiny-tailed iguana was introduced to Florida and Texas through the pet trade in the 1960s, where it has established feral populations. It has been kept in captivity for decades, and captive breeding has increased its availability. Wild populations face threats from habitat loss, hunting, and collection for the pet trade, so buying captive-bred animals is encouraged.24

Owner questions the things everyone asks

How often should I feed my Mexican Spiny-tailed Iguana?

Juveniles need insects daily, while adults eat mostly plants every day or every other day. Follow the food label for amounts and check with your vet for a precise schedule.43 Furry Diary plan

What does a Mexican Spiny-tailed Iguana eat, and what should it never eat?

Adults enjoy dark leafy greens, shredded veggies, edible flowers, and occasional fruit. Juveniles need insects like crickets. Never feed them dog or cat food, or any toxic plants like avocado or rhubarb.43

How much space does a Mexican Spiny-tailed Iguana need?

An adult needs at least a 4-foot-long, 2-foot-wide, and 2.5-foot-tall enclosure with branches for climbing. They love vertical space, so bigger is always better.45

What temperature, light or water does a Mexican Spiny-tailed Iguana need?

Provide a basking spot of 95-105°F and ambient temps of 75-85°F. Full-spectrum UVB lighting is essential, placed within 10 inches of the basking area. Give a shallow water dish for drinking and soaking.45 Furry Diary plan

Spot-clean daily to remove waste, and do a full clean once a month. Change the UVB bulb every 6 months as it fades over time.4 Furry Diary plan
