Personality what they are like

Generally calm and curious, though young snakes can be skittish and may musk when frightened. They become more confident with gentle, regular handling and are not aggressive. They are solitary and should be housed alone.243

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Nocturnal and active in short bursts, especially at dusk and overnight. They benefit from an enclosure with hides, branches, and temperature zones to explore and self-regulate.23

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Low grooming needs. Provide a large water bowl for drinking and occasional soaking to aid shedding. Clean the enclosure regularly and maintain proper humidity.63

Home where they are happiest

A wooden vivarium of at least 3 x 2 x 2 ft with good ventilation, a temperature gradient (warm basking spot and cooler side), and hides. They need low to moderate humidity and a secure enclosure as they are escape artists.63

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Carnivorous; feed frozen-thawed rodents. Hatchlings take pinky mice weekly, adults take larger mice or small rats every two weeks. A water bowl should always be available.6

Company who they like around

Solitary; do not house with other snakes except for breeding. They are not social and can become stressed if cohabited.23

The story where it all began

Nelson's milk snake is a colour variety of the milksnake species Lampropeltis polyzona. It is distinguished from the plain species by its bold tricolour pattern of wide red rings, thinner black rings, and very thin white or cream rings, with a dark-flecked light snout. Albinism and pattern aberrations are also known. The variety is named after American ornithologist Edward William Nelson.17

What temperature, light or water does a Nelson's Milk Snake need?

Provide a temperature gradient with a warm basking spot and a cooler side, along with low to moderate humidity. A large water bowl should always be available for drinking and occasional soaking. Furry Diary's starting plan suggests checking temperatures daily and humidity every two days.63 Furry Diary plan

How often should I clean a Nelson's Milk Snake's home?
