Looks how to spot one
Shell (carapace and plastron)
The shell is relatively flat, elongated and oval, with a brown to nearly black carapace marked by a reticulate pattern of orangish-yellow lines. The plastron ranges from pale yellow to off-white, sometimes with dark seams. Young turtles are bright green with light markings; adults darken with age and may lose all patterning (melanism). Males have flatter shells and elongated foreclaws.245
Personality what they are like
River cooters are generally not aggressive but are active and curious. They may become stressed in cramped quarters. They are not suitable for handling and prefer to be left alone in their enclosure.3
Daily activity how busy a day looks
High. They need a very large aquarium or pond with deep water for swimming, a dry basking platform, and visual cover. Adults require at least 150 cm of tank length.3
Grooming and care the hands-on bits
Powerful external filtration is essential because aquatic turtles produce heavy waste. Regular partial water changes and mechanical cleaning are needed. UVB lighting and a dry basking area with bright light are required. Replace UVB lamps as per manufacturer guidance.3
Home where they are happiest
A very large aquarium or pond-style system with deep, clean water, a dry basking platform, secure lids or high walls to prevent escape, and visual cover. Water temperature should be stable and suitable for a subtropical species. A single adult needs at least 150 x 70 cm footprint.3
Food basics what goes in the bowl
Mostly herbivorous as adults: aquatic plants, dark leafy greens, and quality pellets. Juveniles eat more animal protein such as aquatic invertebrates, crustaceans, and fish. Offer calcium via cuttlebone. Avoid high-protein diets for adults.13
Company who they like around
Can be kept singly or in groups if space allows, but males may compete. Not a social species; does not need companionship. In some US states, sale of small turtles is regulated due to salmonella concerns.1
The story where it all began
The river cooter has been kept as a pet for decades, often sold in pet stores and flea markets. Its attractive juvenile colours and active nature make it popular, but its large adult size and high care requirements mean it is not suitable for beginners. Many are still sold despite FDA regulations on small turtles.13
Recognised by the official bits
- IUCN Tortoise and Freshwater Turtle Specialist Group
- Recognises two subspecies: Pseudemys concinna concinna and Pseudemys concinna suwanniensis.6
- State of Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency
- Describes the river cooter as a large aquatic turtle with a wide, brown to nearly black carapace and orangish-yellow lines.4
