Rosy Boa

From Deserts of south-western North America: southern California and south-west Arizona in the USA, and Baja California and western Sonora in Mexico.12
At a glance the quick version
Looks how to spot one
Smooth, small scales; thick-bodied little boa
A small, chunky boa about as thick as a golf ball. Nearly all rosy boas show three lengthwise stripes, one along the spine and one on each lower side, and the look varies strongly with where the snake comes from.1
Personality what they are like
Famously gentle and slow-moving. Instead of biting, a worried rosy boa is more likely to roll into a ball or release a musky smell. Most tolerate regular handling very well.13
Daily activity how busy a day looks
A calm, unhurried snake that spends much of its time tucked under rocks. Mostly nocturnal in hot weather. Appreciates a sandy substrate it can burrow in and several snug hides.13
Grooming and care the hands-on bits
Handle weekly but no more than daily, beginning with about 5-minute sessions. Spot-clean promptly and replace the substrate fully every 3-6 months. Offer occasional light misting and a humid hide.3
Home where they are happiest
Minimum enclosure about snake length x half length x half length, e.g. 60 x 30 x 30 cm for a 60 cm boa. Basking 29-32 °C, cool zone 24-27 °C, night can drop to about 16 °C. Keep ambient humidity below 60%, as rosy boas dislike damp conditions. 8-10 cm of sand or sandy soil.3
Food basics what goes in the bowl
Small rodents. Juveniles eat every 5-7 days, adults every 10-14 days, with meals around 10% of body weight or no wider than 1.5 times the snake's width. Wild rosy boas mainly take pack rats, mice, kangaroo rats and young rabbits.31
Company who they like around
Solitary; keep one per enclosure.3
The story where it all began
Edward Drinker Cope described the rosy boa in 1861, choosing a name meaning 'three-striped'. Its gentle nature and attractive locality colour forms have made it a popular snake among hobbyists.21
