Looks how to spot one

wool

Finnsheep have a medium-fine, soft wool coat that is typically white, but also occurs in black, brown and the rarer grey. The smooth guard hairs on the head and legs match the wool colour, and the head sometimes carries woolly forelocks. They are polled (no horns) and have a short tail that does not need docking.15

Personality what they are like

Finnsheep are lively, alert, friendly and easy to handle. They have a strong herd instinct and are known for being more docile and manageable than many other sheep breeds. Wethers (neutered males) can become especially tame and make wonderful fibre pets.143

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Moderate activity. They get most exercise through grazing, walking and flock interaction. Rotational grazing is recommended to support hoof health, muscle tone and mental wellbeing. They should not be confined to a small pen long term.3

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Routine care includes annual shearing, hoof trimming, parasite control based on faecal testing, and sheep-specific minerals. Professional shearing costs about $6-20 per sheep, hoof trimming $4-10 if hired out. The short tail needs no docking, and the polled head means no horn problems.35

Home where they are happiest

Secure fencing, dry footing, clean bedding, and enough feeder space are essential. They thrive on good-quality pasture or grass hay with clean water and a sheep-formulated mineral. Shelter from harsh weather is needed. They are well suited to conservation grazing and clearing undergrowth.31

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Adult Finnsheep do well on good pasture or grass hay plus sheep mineral. Grain is not usually needed for maintenance if forage quality is good. Exceptions are growing lambs, thin animals, and pregnant or lactating ewes, which need higher energy and protein. Ewes carrying multiple lambs may need a concentrate in late pregnancy.34

Company who they like around

Finnsheep are highly social and must not be kept alone. They need flock companionship for their mental wellbeing. A calm, predictable handling routine and low-stress movement through gates helps keep them relaxed.3

The story where it all began

The Finnsheep is an ancient landrace breed from Finland, with ancestors arriving nearly 4000 years ago. It belongs to the Northern European short-tailed group and developed without mixing with later introduced breeds. The breed was first imported to North America in 1966 by the University of Manitoba, Canada, and later brought to the USA by private breeders. It remains the most common sheep breed in Finland and is valued worldwide for its prolificacy, docile temperament and soft wool.1246
