Looks how to spot one
Wool and hair
The Hampshire has a dense white fleece that covers the body and extends over the forehead as a wool cap. The face, ears and legs are a rich dark brown or black and are covered in short, coarse hair, not wool. The breed is hornless (polled) in both sexes, with a large, open-faced, muscular build.123
Personality what they are like
Hampshire sheep are known for their calm, quiet and mild disposition. They are not easily excited and are described as laid-back, which makes them pleasant to handle and suitable for exhibitors and hobby keepers. Despite their large size, they are generally docile and manageable.145
Daily activity how busy a day looks
Hampshires need ample space to graze and exercise. They perform best on fertile pastures and improved grazing swards. They are active sheep that benefit from being outdoors on good quality forage. A secure, well-fenced paddock is essential.3
Grooming and care the hands-on bits
Hampshires require routine hoof trimming every 6-8 weeks and annual shearing to remove the fleece. Regular health checks for parasites and fly strike are important. Their wool cap should be kept clear of the eyes to avoid vision problems.1
Home where they are happiest
Hampshires need a dry, sheltered area such as a barn or field shelter to protect them from extreme weather. They are hardy and can tolerate both cold and heat, but access to shade and fresh water is essential. Fencing must be sturdy to contain these large, active sheep.43
Food basics what goes in the bowl
Hampshires thrive on good quality pasture grass and hay. They may need supplemental concentrates during late pregnancy or for finishing lambs. Fresh, clean water and a mineral salt block should always be available.3
The story where it all began
The Hampshire Down was developed in the early 19th century in the county of Hampshire, southern England. It was created by crossing the local tall, horned, white-faced sheep (the Old Hampshire, Wiltshire Horn and Berkshire Knot) with the improved Southdown breed. Breeders such as John Twynam and William Humphrey played key roles in refining the type. The breed quickly became valued as a superior meat sheep and was exported to North America from 1840 onward. The breed society was formed in 1889 and remains active today.123
