Looks how to spot one
hair coat (shedding)
Katahdins have a unique coat that sheds naturally each spring, so they never need shearing. The coat consists of coarse outer hair with a softer woolly undercoat that thickens in cold weather and is shed as temperatures rise.13
Personality what they are like
Katahdins are calm, friendly and easy to handle. They have a moderate flocking instinct and respond well to regular handling. Rams are usually gentle but should be treated with respect, as any ram can become assertive.15
Daily activity how busy a day looks
These sheep are active grazers and do best when allowed to roam over pasture or rough land. They use up energy naturally through foraging and do not need extra exercise if they have space to graze.5
Grooming and care the hands-on bits
Care is minimal because they shed their own coat and rarely need shearing. Hooves should be trimmed regularly. Provide a copper-free salt block and fresh water. Routine health checks and parasite management are still important, but Katahdins are naturally more resistant to worms.52
Home where they are happiest
Katahdins thrive on pasture and unimproved grazing land. They are hardy in both hot and cold climates; their hair coat is waterproof and provides good insulation. Shelter from extreme weather is advisable only for very young lambs or during severe storms. A 5-gallon bucket of water per day may suffice for 10 sheep on good pasture.51
Food basics what goes in the bowl
A full diet consists mostly of grass, hay, weeds, brambles and other forage. They are excellent at converting rough pasture into meat. In winter or on poor pasture, supplement with good-quality hay. Provide a copper-free mineral salt block. Avoid copper in supplements because it can build up to toxic levels in sheep.5
Company who they like around
Sheep are flock animals and must never be kept alone. Katahdins are friendly and bond with their flock mates. They are also docile with humans, making them suitable for hobby keepers with some sheep-keeping experience. There are no legal restrictions on keeping this breed in most countries.15
The story where it all began
The Katahdin breed was developed in the 1950s and 1960s by Michael Piel on his farm in Maine, USA. He imported a few hair sheep from the Virgin Islands and crossed them with several British wool breeds, mainly the Suffolk, aiming to create a meat sheep that would not require shearing. After nearly 20 years of selective breeding, he assembled a flock of ewes he named after Mount Katahdin in Maine. In the 1970s he added Wiltshire Horn blood to improve size and carcass quality. The result is a hardy, easy-care hair sheep that sheds naturally and is now popular among hobby farmers for its low maintenance and excellent meat quality.123

Owner questions the things everyone asks
How often should I feed my Katahdin Sheep, and what should it eat?
Your Katahdin should have constant access to grass, hay, or other forage, as they are natural grazers. In winter or on poor pasture, supplement with good-quality hay, and always provide a copper-free mineral salt block. For exact amounts, check the feed label and ask your vet.5 Furry Diary plan
Which foods and plants are dangerous for a Katahdin Sheep?
Avoid feeding your sheep any foods from the ASPCA list, including chocolate, avocado, grapes, onions, garlic, and anything with xylitol. Also, never give copper supplements, as copper can build up to toxic levels in sheep.56
How much space and land does a Katahdin Sheep need?
Katahdins thrive on pasture and unimproved grazing land, and they need enough space to roam and forage. A 5-gallon bucket of water per day may suffice for 10 sheep on good pasture, but consult a good breeder for specific land requirements.51
What kind of shelter does a Katahdin Sheep need?
These hardy sheep are comfortable in most climates thanks to their waterproof hair coat, so shelter is only needed for very young lambs or during severe storms. A simple, dry, draft-free area will do, but ask your vet for local advice.51
How do I look after a Katahdin Sheep's hooves or feet?
Hooves should be trimmed regularly, about once a month as part of your care routine. Check them for overgrowth or debris, and trim carefully to keep them healthy. For specific trimming techniques, ask a good breeder or your vet.5 Furry Diary plan
Does a Katahdin Sheep need grooming or shearing?

Can a Katahdin Sheep live alone?
No, sheep are flock animals and must never be kept alone. Katahdins are friendly and bond with their flock mates, so always keep at least two together for their well-being.15
How long does a Katahdin Sheep live?
Katahdins typically live between 10 and 12 years. With good care, proper nutrition, and regular vet checks, they can enjoy a full, healthy life.2
Is a Katahdin Sheep good with children?
Yes, Katahdins are calm, friendly, and easy to handle, making them suitable for families. However, rams should be treated with respect as any ram can become assertive, so always supervise children around them.15
What regular vet care does a Katahdin Sheep need?
Routine health checks and parasite management are important, though Katahdins are naturally more resistant to worms. Follow a care plan that includes daily flock checks and monthly foot inspections, and consult your vet for vaccinations and deworming schedules.52 Furry Diary plan
