Looks how to spot one
Wool
Ouessants have a thick fleece of long wool with a dense undercoat, which protects them from harsh Atlantic weather. The wool is fine, around 25 to 28 microns, and is highly valued for spinning and weaving.14
Personality what they are like
Ouessants are typically far friendlier than other primitive breeds, easy to tame, and can make excellent pets. They are intelligent, inquisitive, gentle, and full of character. Rams can charge if they become over familiar with people, but ewes and wethers are ideal companions.13
Daily activity how busy a day looks
They are content with a small field and a shelter, and will happily graze grass, though they tend to leave thistles and nettles. They are excellent for conservation grazing and do not poach the ground if conditions are not overly wet.43
Grooming and care the hands-on bits
They need shearing once a year to remove the previous year's fleece. Hooves should be trimmed three to four times a year depending on the ground. Regular worming or worm counts are important to manage parasites. Daily monitoring is necessary, and they should not be left longer than 24 hours without checks.35
Home where they are happiest
A couple or pair can be happy on around 3000 square metres of land, depending on terrain, with enough to allow rotation and rest the pasture. They need a fence and a shelter, and in winter a small amount of hay is sufficient. They are hardy and rely on staying together as a flock to protect themselves from predators.43
Food basics what goes in the bowl
They do not set high demands on nutrition and can thrive on poor grazing. Overfeeding can cause problems, so treats and granular feeds should be watched. In winter or dry summers, hay may be needed to supplement grazing. Clean water should always be available.635
Company who they like around
They should never be kept on their own as they will become distressed. They can be kept in small flocks of three to ten sheep. They are not aggressive, but rams can charge if allowed to become over familiar with people. Ewes and wethers make ideal pets.43
The story where it all began
The Ouessant sheep is a rare heritage breed that developed on the island of Ouessant, off the coast of Brittany, France. Shaped by harsh Atlantic conditions and poor grazing, it became the smallest recognised breed of sheep in the world. The breed almost disappeared at the start of the 20th century but was rescued from extinction in France. It was first imported to the UK in the 1990s, with further introductions in the 2000s from France and Holland. Today it is kept in small flocks or on smallholdings, valued for its manageable size, friendly temperament, and low-maintenance nature. It remains on the EU and UK lists of 'At Risk' rare and heritage breeds.142
