Harvest Mouse
Micromys minutus
Also called Eurasian harvest mouse, Zwergmaus
From Europe and Asia1
At a glance the quick version
Adults usually weigh about 4-7 g; Wikipedia gives up to 11 g.
Coat and looks how to spot one
short fur, prehensile tail
A tiny mouse with a blunt nose, small ears and warm golden-brown fur over a white or cream belly. Its long, fine tail can grip grass stems like an extra hand.124
Personality what they are like
A shy, nimble mouse that spends much of its life climbing among tall grass. It is a pet to observe rather than handle.12
Daily activity how busy a day looks
Needs plenty of vertical space with tall grasses, twigs or reeds to climb, mirroring its life among tall vegetation.12
Grooming and care the hands-on bits
Self-grooming. Offer fresh long grass so it can weave its own round nests off the ground.43
Home where they are happiest
A tall, well-ventilated enclosure planted or filled with grasses and stems; in the wild it lives in tussocky grassland, reedbeds and hedgerows. In Germany keeping it requires proof of origin and registration with the nature authority.23
Food basics what goes in the bowl
Mainly seeds and fruit, plus small invertebrates, with some green plant parts.123
Company who they like around
Lives mostly alone in summer, although large numbers may share grain stores peacefully in winter.13
The story where it all began
The English naturalist Gilbert White wrote about its ball-shaped nests in the 18th century before the species was formally described. It is the smallest rodent in Europe, and hobbyists in Europe keep it in planted enclosures.13
