From Despite its name, the African Goose is not from Africa but originated in China, specifically the Teochew and Swatow regions of South China. It is one of two domestic breeds derived from the wild swan goose (Anser cygnoides), the other being the Chinese Goose.1

British standard: geese 8-11 kg, ganders 10-13 kg. The German standard gives 7 kg for geese and 8 kg for ganders. Young ganders may reach 16-18 lb (7.3-8.2 kg) by 15-18 weeks.
A very large, heavy goose with a long, slightly arched neck and a prominent knob on the forehead. The body is carried at about 35 degrees to the horizontal, with a long, fairly flat back and a smooth, rounded breast and belly. A crescent-shaped dewlap hangs from the lower jaw. The tail is held above the back line, especially in males.1
African geese are intelligent, inquisitive and highly social. With regular handling from a young age they become docile and pleasant companions. Some males may be aggressive, especially during breeding season or when protecting nests. They are very loud and constantly vocalise, which can be a nuisance in residential areas.23
Daily activity how busy a day looks
These geese need daily movement, grazing time and room to patrol. They are active, curious birds that stay healthier when they can walk, forage, bathe and interact with flock mates. Limited space can lead to boredom, weight gain, foot problems and increased territorial behaviour.4
Grooming and care the hands-on bits
Provide a clean swimming area (pool or pond) that is maintained daily to prevent infections. The large forehead knob is susceptible to frostbite, so shelter is essential in cold weather. Housing should have grass floors and protection from predators, with at least one square metre per goose indoors and two square metres outdoors.32
Home where they are happiest
African geese need a spacious, secure enclosure with access to a pond or pool for swimming. They require shelter from extreme weather, especially to protect the knob from frostbite. They are non-migratory and cannot fly, so a fenced area is sufficient. They do best in a moderate climate.32
Food basics what goes in the bowl
Primarily herbivorous: grass, seeds, aquatic plants, small grains (rye, barley, wheat), and occasional snails, small fish and insect larvae. A commercial waterfowl or game-bird maintenance pellet with 14-17% protein and 3-6% fat is recommended, plus access to grass. Avoid feeding only bread, lettuce or corn as these can cause nutritional deficiencies. Clean water must always be available.34
Company who they like around
Highly social birds that thrive in groups (gaggles). They should have at least one or two companions. They form pair bonds and each male can be mated with two to six females. They are territorial and will alert owners to intruders, but may become aggressive when protecting nests or chicks.32
The story where it all began
The African Goose is a domestic breed that originated in China, not Africa. It was developed from the wild swan goose (Anser cygnoides) through selective breeding, which gave it a much larger body, a prominent forehead knob and a dewlap compared to its Chinese relative. Birds of this type were brought to Europe, possibly via Madagascar, and were present in Britain before the end of the 17th century. They arrived in North America in the mid-1800s and have been kept as a recognised breed since then. Today they are valued as pets, guard animals and for meat production.12
