A compact spaniel with long ears and a silky coat that is short on the head and medium length on the body, flowing into generous feathering on the ears, chest, belly and legs. It can lie flat or be slightly wavy.12

Cheerful, sweet and easy-going, the American Cocker is affectionate with its family yet still lively enough for play and field work. It generally gets on well with children, other pets and people.13

The story where it all began
Spaniels reached North America early, and the modern American Cocker traces largely to Ch. Obo II, born around 1881. Over the following decades American breeders favoured a smaller dog with a distinctive head and fuller coat, so the American and English types drifted apart and were eventually registered as separate breeds.2
