Coat and looks how to spot one

medium-length, flat and silky with feathering

A compact, sturdy little gundog, roughly as tall at the shoulder as it is long from shoulder to tail. The coat lies flat with a silky feel and should never be wiry or wavy; the legs and body carry feathering, and the long low-set ears are well covered in hair. Working-bred dogs usually carry a shorter coat and lighter ears than show-bred dogs.3425

Personality what they are like

Cheerful is the word breed people use most, and the constantly wagging tail backs it up. Cockers are soft, loving and people-focused, happiest when they are part of whatever the family is doing. Out on a walk or in the field they switch into a bustling, nose-down worker, then settle back into a relaxed companion at home. They are bright and eager to please, so gentle reward-based training suits them well.3475

Daily activity how busy a day looks

At least an hour of exercise a day, ideally split into several outings with plenty of time to sniff and some safe off-lead running. They also enjoy training games, scentwork and agility. Working-line cockers tend to want more activity than show-line dogs.652

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

A daily brush keeps the silky coat and ear feathering free of tangles, and a quick comb after walks removes burrs and mud. Many owners book a professional trim roughly every three months. Bath only when needed, with a dog shampoo. Show-bred coats need more upkeep than the shorter working-type coats.65

Home where they are happiest

Adaptable to town or country living as long as daily exercise is met. Prefers company for most of the day rather than long spells alone.65

Food basics what goes in the bowl

A complete, balanced commercial dog food fed as two meals a day at regular times, with portions set to keep a lean shape. Keep treats to around a tenth of daily calories and leave a gap between meals and exercise.5

Company who they like around

A very sociable, people-oriented breed that bonds closely with its family and does best with company for much of the day. Early, positive socialisation with different people, places and animals helps build a confident adult. Often recommended as a friendly first dog.54

The story where it all began

Spaniels have been used in hunting in Britain for centuries, and for a long time the different types came from the same litters and were sorted by size and job. The smaller dogs were used to work thick cover and flush woodcock, which gave them the name 'cocking spaniel'. When the Kennel Club began registering dogs in the 1870s, spaniels were still split mainly by weight, and a dog under about 25 lb counted as a cocker. A small black dog called Obo, born in 1879, is regarded as the foundation sire of the modern breed, and his descendants also shaped early American lines. The Kennel Club recognised the Cocker Spaniel as a separate variety in 1893, and in 1901 the old weight limits were dropped so breeders could concentrate on type; a breed club followed in 1902. Early show rings were dominated by blacks, and a Welsh Springer outcross helped establish the parti-coloured lines. Between the wars the Of Ware kennel of H. S. Lloyd made the breed famous at Crufts. In North America, breeders who preferred the larger English type drifted apart from those developing the smaller American Cocker; the English Cocker Spaniel Club of America was formed in the mid-1930s, the AKC listed the English type as a separate variety in 1936, and it became a full breed in 1946. Today the breed exists in both working and show lines and is one of the best-loved family dogs in the UK.36892

Fun facts for the dinner table

  1. 1

The name comes from the woodcock, the game bird these small spaniels were bred to flush from dense cover.6

  2. 2

Cocker Spaniels have won Best in Show at Crufts seven times (1930, 1931, 1938, 1939, 1948, 1950 and 1996), more than any other breed.10

  3. 3

Six of those seven Crufts wins went to dogs owned and bred by H. S. Lloyd of the Of Ware kennel, and two of his dogs, Luckystar of Ware and Exquisite Model of Ware, won in back-to-back years.10

  4. 4

The foundation sire Obo, born in 1879, was tiny by modern standards: about 10 inches at the withers and around 22 lb.9

  5. 5

The breed's nickname 'the merry cocker' comes from its almost constantly wagging tail, which the FCI standard itself mentions.6

  6. 6

Heiress Geraldine Rockefeller Dodge led the English Cocker Spaniel Club of America from 1941 and wrote a 1942 book documenting the pedigrees that separated English and American Cockers.8

  7. 7

In 2023 the Cocker Spaniel was the third most registered breed with the UK Kennel Club, with 26,239 puppies registered.11
