Coat and looks how to spot one
short, thick coat
A fairly dense, flat-lying coat that is not overly short, practical for working through cover.13
Personality what they are like
A keen, upbeat pack hound with a bright and alert look. It is loyal to its people and brings plenty of drive and stamina to the hunt.31
Daily activity how busy a day looks
Bred to follow hare and deer in packs, so it needs plenty of daily running and scent-based activity.32
Grooming and care the hands-on bits
The thick, flat coat benefits from regular brushing.3
Company who they like around
A pack hunter by heritage that is used to working with other hounds.23
The story where it all began
The breed was developed in 19th-century France, traditionally credited to Baron Gérard, to hunt hare in packs. It sits between the Beagle and the Harrier in size, and it is unclear whether it began as a cross of the two or simply as a hound of in-between type.23
