Coat and looks how to spot one

double coat

A square, medium-sized dog with a harsh, straight, flat-lying outer coat of short to medium length over a soft undercoat that thickens or thins with the climate.13

Colourssandgoldredcreamliverblackwhite with coloured mask and patchessolid colours with or without white markings13

Personality what they are like

Watchful and quick to respond, gentle and loyal with its own family but reserved with people it does not know. Clever and confident, it learns readily, especially with positive, reward-based training.134

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Agile and tireless enough to join hikers and runners, yet it does not demand extreme amounts of exercise. It does well in agility, obedience, herding and sentry work.4

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

The harsh, flat double coat is easy care; regular brushing keeps it tidy.34

Company who they like around

Territorial and vocal by nature, it thrives with early socialisation and an engaged owner.34

The story where it all began

Dogs of this type lived for thousands of years alongside Bedouin herders in the region. In the 1930s Dr Rudolphina Menzel tamed and bred semi-wild dogs from the Negev, supplying working dogs for the military and later training them as guide dogs for the blind.24

Owner questions the things everyone asks

How often should I feed my Canaan Dog, and at what times?

Feed your adult Canaan Dog at least two meals a day, and puppies three to four smaller meals. Consistent meal times help their digestion, so aim for morning and evening. For exact amounts, check the food label and ask your vet.6

What should a Canaan Dog eat, and which foods are dangerous?

Feed a high-quality dog food appropriate for their age and activity level. Dangerous foods include chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, xylitol, and macadamia nuts, these are especially risky for dogs. Always avoid alcohol, yeast dough, and raw bones too.7

How often should I bathe a Canaan Dog?

Furry Diary's starting plan suggests a bath every 56 days, and general guidance says at least once every three months. Bathe more often if your dog gets very dirty or has skin issues, but avoid over-bathing to protect their coat.8 Furry Diary plan

How often does a Canaan Dog need brushing?

Brush your Canaan Dog weekly to keep their harsh double coat tidy and remove loose hair. Furry Diary's plan recommends brushing every 7 days, which suits their easy-care coat. More frequent brushing during shedding seasons helps manage loose fur.348 Furry Diary plan

How do I trim a Canaan Dog's nails, and how often?

Trim nails every 28 days or sooner if you hear clicking on the floor. Cut a little at a time, stopping before the quick (the pink part inside). If you're unsure, ask your vet or a groomer to show you the first time.8 Furry Diary plan

How much exercise does a Canaan Dog need?

This agile breed enjoys daily walks and play, and they can join hikers and runners without needing extreme amounts. Furry Diary's plan suggests daily exercise, and they also thrive in activities like agility or herding. A tired Canaan Dog is a happy one!4 Furry Diary plan

How do I look after a Canaan Dog's teeth and ears?

Brush their teeth two to three times a week (daily is ideal) using dog toothpaste only. Check ears weekly for moisture or dirt, and gently dry them, never push anything into the ear canal. Furry Diary's plan includes weekly ear checks and frequent brushing.8 Furry Diary plan

How long does a Canaan Dog live?

Lifespan varies by individual, so ask your vet or a good breeder for typical ranges. With proper care, many medium-sized dogs live into their early teens, but no specific number is given for this breed.

Is a Canaan Dog good with children and other pets?

Canaan Dogs are gentle and loyal with their own family, including children, but they are reserved with strangers and can be territorial. Early socialisation helps them get along with other pets, though their herding instincts may show. Always supervise introductions.134

Can a Canaan Dog be left alone?

This breed is territorial and vocal, and they thrive with an engaged owner, so they may not enjoy long periods alone. Early training and plenty of mental stimulation can help, but it's best to ask a breeder or vet for advice specific to your dog.34
