Looks how to spot one
short, fine coat
The American Quarter Horse has a compact, heavily muscled body with a broad chest, powerful rounded hindquarters, a short broad head, small active ears, large wide-set eyes, and a firm mouth. It stands between 14 and 16 hands high.51
Personality what they are like
American Quarter Horses are known for their calm, gentle and intelligent nature. They are eager to please, easy to handle and train, making them suitable for riders of all experience levels, including beginners. Their docile temperament and cow sense (ability to outmanoeuvre cattle) are hallmarks of the breed.31
Daily activity how busy a day looks
These horses love to sprint and need plenty of daily exercise to maintain a strong body and healthy weight. They excel in many disciplines including racing, trail riding, ranching, dressage, barrel racing, roping, reining and jumping. Consistent turnout and daily exercise are essential.3
Grooming and care the hands-on bits
Follow a standard equine grooming routine at least once a week, using a curry comb and dandy brush to remove debris. Use soft-bristled brushes on sensitive areas like the face. Check the whole body for signs of injury, infection or irritation during grooming. Examine ears, nostrils and eyes, cleaning gently with a damp cloth if needed. Check hooves daily for injury or infection.3
Home where they are happiest
Require a safe, spacious environment with access to pasture or a dry lot, shelter from extreme weather, and secure fencing. Daily turnout is important for their physical and mental wellbeing. Regular farrier maintenance and veterinary care are essential.34
Food basics what goes in the bowl
A balanced diet of hay, pasture and grain, fed in appropriate amounts to prevent unwanted weight gain. The exact amount depends on the horse's size, age and activity level. Avoid overfeeding as excess weight can lead to metabolic disorders. Fresh water must always be available.3
Company who they like around
Horses are herd animals and American Quarter Horses thrive with equine companionship. They are gentle and easy to handle, making them suitable for owners of all experience levels. Regular human interaction and training help maintain their calm disposition.3
The story where it all began
The American Quarter Horse originated in the early 1600s in colonial America. Its foundation bloodlines came from Arab, Barb and Turk horses bred to English mares, producing a compact, heavily muscled horse that could sprint a quarter of a mile faster than any other. Spanish-derived bloodlines from Cherokee and Chickasaw ponies were later added for quickness, and English Thoroughbred influence followed in the mid 1700s. These horses were used for sprint racing, then adapted as work horses for pulling wagons, herding cattle and exploring the American West. The breed was formally recognised with the founding of the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) in 1940. Today it is known as 'The World's Most Versatile Horse' and is used in ranching, racing, rodeo events, show jumping, dressage and recreational riding.261
