Looks how to spot one

stock horse

The Appaloosa is a light horse breed with a sturdy, well-muscled body. It stands between 14 and 16 hands high and weighs between 950 and 1,250 pounds. The breed is best known for its striking spotted coat patterns, but also has distinctive mottled skin, striped hooves, and visible white sclera around the eyes.125

Personality what they are like

Appaloosas are generally gentle, obedient and trustworthy. They are intelligent and eager to work, making them easy to train. Their calm and friendly nature makes them suitable for riders of all ages and experience levels, including beginners and children.234

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Appaloosas are athletic and enjoy working. They excel in both Western and English disciplines including racing, barrel racing, jumping, roping, endurance, reining, dressage, cutting, pole bending, trail riding and pleasure riding. They need regular exercise and mental stimulation.24

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Brush the coat at least weekly and check hooves daily. Use a curry comb to loosen dirt, then a dandy brush to remove debris. For sensitive areas like the face, use a soft-bristled brush. The mane and tail are thin, so use a gentle mane and tail brush. Light-coloured Appaloosas may need more frequent grooming and are prone to sunburn, so apply horse-safe sunscreen or use a fly mask with UV protection when they are outdoors. Clean hooves daily with a hoof pick and look for signs of injury or infection. Work with a farrier to keep hooves trimmed and healthy.2

Home where they are happiest

Appaloosas need access to shelter from extreme weather, a safe pasture or paddock with secure fencing, and plenty of space to move and graze. Fresh, clean water must always be available. They are hardy and adaptable, but their light-coloured skin requires protection from strong sun.2

Food basics what goes in the bowl

A typical Appaloosa needs 10 to 20 pounds of forage (grass or hay) each day, plus grains, pellets, treats and a salt block as needed. Every horse is an individual, so work with a veterinarian to determine the optimal diet based on activity level and bloodline. Fresh, clean water must always be accessible.2

Company who they like around

Horses are herd animals and Appaloosas thrive with companionship, whether from other horses or compatible livestock. They are friendly and gentle, making them good therapy horses. They are suitable for all levels of riders, including young riders and beginners.23

The story where it all began

The Appaloosa breed has ancient roots, with spotted horses appearing in cave paintings from around 20,000 years ago. The modern breed was developed in the Pacific Northwest of the United States by the Nez Perce people, who were the only Native Americans to selectively breed their horses. They prized the animals for their endurance, speed, intelligence and distinctive colouring. Early white settlers called them 'Palouse horses' after the Palouse River in Nez Perce territory, and the name eventually evolved into Appaloosa. The breed nearly disappeared in the late 1800s, but was revived by Claude Thompson, who founded the Appaloosa Horse Club in 1938. Today the breed is flourishing worldwide.1236
