At a glance the quick version
Looks how to spot one
Fine coat
The Belgian Warmblood has a finer, sleeker coat than many other horse breeds, and its mane and tail are also finer in texture. This makes grooming easier but means the horse needs extra protection in cold weather.3
Personality what they are like
The Belgian Warmblood is intelligent, courageous and people-orientated. It is generally cooperative and easy to train, with a calm nature that forgives small rider mistakes. However, it needs plenty of exercise and company; without enough activity or social contact it can become strong-willed.42
Daily activity how busy a day looks
This breed requires daily exercise and regular training to stay happy and healthy. It is bred for show jumping, dressage and eventing, so it thrives on structured work and turnout. Without sufficient activity it may become restless or difficult.45
Grooming and care the hands-on bits
Regular grooming with a curry comb, dandy brush, shedding blade, body finishing brush, mane comb and tail brush keeps the coat clean and healthy. Hooves must be picked out daily and trimmed or shod by a farrier. Clipping is common for sport horses to manage sweat. In winter the horse needs to be stabled at night because its fine coat offers less insulation.32
Home where they are happiest
Belgian Warmbloods need a stable with clean bedding, access to a paddock or pasture for daily turnout, and shelter from extreme weather. The stable should be well ventilated and large enough for a horse of this size. Fencing must be safe and secure.5
Food basics what goes in the bowl
A balanced diet based on good quality forage (mid-maturity grass hay) is essential. Horses in heavy work may need extra energy from concentrates or fat supplements. Vitamins and minerals must be adjusted to support performance and recovery. Avoid sudden changes to prevent digestive upset.25
Company who they like around
Horses are herd animals and Belgian Warmbloods need regular contact with other horses. They can become stressed or develop behavioural issues if left alone for long periods. Turnout with companions is strongly recommended.4
The story where it all began
The Belgian Warmblood was created after World War II when the need for heavy draft horses declined and the ban on breeding riding horses in Flanders was lifted in 1954. Breeders crossed local Brabant mares with imported warmblood stallions from Gelderland, Hanover, France and Holstein. The breed society was founded in 1955, and the studbook started from scratch using only the best sport horse bloodlines. Today it is one of three Belgian warmblood registries, alongside the Zangersheide and the Belgian Sport Horse.16
Recognised by the official bits
- Belgian Warmblood Breeding Association (BWP)
- The studbook was opened in 1955. Horses are admitted through visual inspection and evaluation (keuring) for athletic ability, conformation and movement.6
