Personality what they are like

The Boulonnais is renowned for its gentle, calm and willing nature. It is intelligent, docile and easy to train, making it a pleasant companion for both beginners and experienced owners. Despite its large size, it is energetic and courageous, yet remains gentle and easygoing.45

Daily activity how busy a day looks

The Boulonnais needs regular exercise to stay fit and healthy. It enjoys driving competitions, leisure riding and light work. Without sufficient activity, it can gain weight easily, so a balanced routine of work or exercise is important.42

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Grooming is straightforward: regular brushing with a curry comb, dandy brush and body finishing brush keeps the coat clean and shiny. The thick mane and tail need careful detangling. Hooves must be cleaned daily and trimmed regularly by a farrier. Bathing with a gentle equine shampoo is fine when needed.54

Home where they are happiest

The Boulonnais needs a spacious stable or shelter with good ventilation, plus access to a paddock or pasture for turnout. It is a hardy breed that adapts well to outdoor life, but must have protection from extreme weather. Secure fencing is essential due to its size and strength.4

Food basics what goes in the bowl

A diet based on good quality hay fed ad libitum is essential. Concentrates should be given sparingly according to workload, favouring feeds low in starch and sugar. The breed has an efficient metabolism and can become overweight if overfed or given rich pasture. Careful weight management is important to prevent metabolic issues.4

Company who they like around

Boulonnais horses are social animals that thrive on companionship, whether with other horses or attentive human interaction. They are gentle and easy to handle, making them suitable for owners of all experience levels. They enjoy being part of a routine and respond well to calm, consistent handling.45

The story where it all began

The Boulonnais draught horse originates from the Boulonnais region in northern France, near the English Channel. Historically, there were two main types: the 'Grand Boulonnais', a large, powerful horse used for ploughing and heavy work, and the 'Petit Boulonnais' or 'Mareyeur', a lighter, faster horse used to transport fresh fish from Boulogne-sur-Mer to Paris. This fish run gave the breed its nickname and is commemorated in a modern driving trial. The breed was officially recognised in 1886. Its numbers declined sharply in the 20th century with mechanisation, but dedicated breeders have preserved it. Today it is appreciated for driving, leisure riding and as a symbol of French rural heritage.1236
