Looks how to spot one
feather (long leg hair), heavy mane and tail
The Gypsy Vanner has a powerful, compact cob body with a broad chest and strong bone. It is known for its abundant, flowing mane and tail and heavy feathering on the lower legs, which give it a striking, majestic appearance.34
Personality what they are like
The Gypsy Vanner is renowned for its gentle, tractable nature and sensible disposition. It is described as mannerly, manageable, eager to please, confident, courageous, alert, and loyal, with a genuine sociable outlook. These horses are often compared to Golden Retrievers with hooves because of their calm and friendly attitude, making them ideal for families, therapy work, and children.36
Daily activity how busy a day looks
Gypsy Vanners need regular exercise through riding, driving, or turnout in a paddock. They are versatile and enjoy dressage, jumping, trail riding, ranch work, and competitive driving. Daily movement is important to keep them healthy and content.46
The story where it all began
The Gypsy Vanner was developed by the Romanichal Travellers of the British Isles, who needed a strong, compact horse to pull their brightly painted vardos (living wagons). From around 1850, they used mules and discarded horses, later refining the breed by crossing Shire, Clydesdale, Friesian, and native Dale Pony bloodlines. After the Second World War, the breed's look was standardised, with piebald and skewbald patterns becoming prized. The first Gypsy Vanners were exported to the United States in 1996, and the breed quickly gained popularity for its gentle temperament and striking appearance.124
