Looks how to spot one

hair coat

The Marwari has a fine, thin skin and a coat that can develop a metallic sheen similar to the Akhal-Teke when well cared for. Its most distinctive feature is the inward-curving ears, which can rotate 180 degrees and sometimes touch at the tips.21

Personality what they are like

Marwari horses are spirited, alert and courageous, with a deep loyalty to their handler that was forged on the battlefield. They form powerful bonds with one person and are naturally competitive, but they are sensitive and do not tolerate rough or inconsistent handling. They are not a beginner's horse; they need an experienced, patient owner who can match their fire with fairness.42

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Marwari horses need regular daily exercise and thrive on work such as endurance riding, trail riding, polo, lower-level dressage and exotic equestrian shows. They are naturally gaited and many perform a smooth four-beat amble called the aphcal or revaal. They should not be confined to a stall without turnout and exercise.26

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Regular grooming is important to maintain the coat's natural sheen. The breed's thin skin makes it sensitive to insect bites, so good pest control around the stable is essential. Most Marwari horses can be ridden without shoes. In wet or cold climates, proper shelter must be provided and the horse must be given time to acclimate gradually.24

Home where they are happiest

This breed is adapted to the hot, arid climate of the Thar Desert and thrives in high-altitude desert environments with extreme temperature ranges. It can travel far on minimal water and feed. Owners outside India must provide shelter from cold and damp, and must manage grazing carefully to prevent obesity. The Marwari is not suited to a carbohydrate- and fat-heavy diet typical of many Western horse feeds.24

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Marwari horses have an efficient desert metabolism and do well on a forage-first diet with low-sugar hay, restricted grazing and minimal grain. They gain weight easily on rich pasture and concentrate feeds, which can lead to insulin dysregulation and laminitis. Body condition scoring and disciplined feeding are essential.42

Company who they like around

Marwari horses are social animals that enjoy both human and equine companionship. They bond intensely with one person and can become defensive if handled roughly or inconsistently. They are not a placid breed and need an experienced, patient owner. There are no legal restrictions on keeping this breed, but it is rare outside India.42

The story where it all began

The Marwari horse was first bred in the 12th century by the Rathore rulers of the Marwar region in Rajasthan. Its ancestry includes Arabian and Mongolian blood, confirmed by genome mapping in 2014. For centuries it served as a cavalry horse, renowned for its bravery, loyalty and ability to carry a wounded soldier home without guidance. Only members of certain castes were permitted to ride it. After India's independence, the breed declined but has seen a revival thanks to dedicated societies and breeders.21
