Daily activity how busy a day looks
Morgans are active and athletic, excelling in many disciplines such as driving, dressage, endurance, and trail riding. They need regular exercise and mental stimulation to stay happy and healthy.34
Grooming and care the hands-on bits
Basic equine grooming is sufficient, with regular brushing at least once a week. Hooves should be checked by a farrier regularly. They are easy keepers, so monitor weight to avoid obesity.43
Home where they are happiest
Morgans thrive in a variety of settings, from backyard barns to working ranches, as long as they have basic shelter, proper diet, and regular veterinary and farrier care. They are adaptable and do well in both cold and warm climates.2
Food basics what goes in the bowl
Forage (hay or grass) is the foundation of the diet, roughly 2% of body weight daily. They are easy keepers and need minimal grain; avoid overfeeding and sugary feeds. Fresh water should always be available.43
Company who they like around
Morgans are social animals that bond closely with people and do well with regular interaction. They are friendly and enjoy being part of family activities, but they also get along with other horses.24
The story where it all began
The Morgan breed traces back to a stallion named Justin Morgan (originally called Figure), foaled in 1789 in the United States. He was a genetic 'sport' with unique characteristics that he passed on to his offspring, establishing a distinct breed. The first registry was founded in 1909, and all Morgans today descend from him through three main sons: Sherman, Bulrush, and Woodbury. The breed became famous for its versatility, stamina, and gentle temperament, and was widely used in agriculture, driving, and riding.361
