Looks how to spot one

hair and exoskeleton

Juveniles are strikingly colourful with a green body, electric blue legs, pink joint markings, and a deep blue abdomen with reddish-pink stripes. Adults become more subdued: females have a teal carapace with cream edges, sapphire blue legs, and a black abdomen with a red stripe and cream tiger stripes. The whole body is covered in fine setae, and they possess Type II urticating hairs.52

Personality what they are like

Quick and alert but not typically aggressive. It prefers to flee or hide rather than stand its ground, though it may flick hairs or bite if cornered. Its venom is mild for a New World tarantula. Handling is not recommended because it is fast, skittish, and prone to jumping.457

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Arboreal and very active. It builds elaborate tubular silk retreats and spends much of its time climbing, webbing, and redecorating. Needs plenty of vertical space and anchor points for webbing.16

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Low maintenance. Keep the enclosure clean and dry between mistings. Provide a water dish that can be reached without destroying the web. Avoid stagnant moisture and ensure good cross-ventilation. Do not handle.14

Home where they are happiest

A tall, well-ventilated arboreal enclosure (minimum 30 x 30 x 45 cm for an adult). Use a cork tube or bark slab, branches, and foliage for climbing and webbing. Maintain moderate to high humidity (65-75%) with occasional misting, but cross-ventilation is essential to prevent stagnant air. Temperature 70-80 °F (21-27 °C). House alone.152

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Insectivorous. Feed crickets, roaches, locusts (where legal), and other suitable insects. Offer prey near the web retreat. Adults eat one medium to large item every 7-14 days; slings eat smaller prey more frequently.152

Company who they like around

Solitary. Must be housed alone as cohabitation can lead to cannibalism.2

The story where it all began

Originally classified in the genus Avicularia, this species was moved to the new genus Ybyrapora. It entered the tarantula keeping hobby in the early 2000s and has always been considered rare and somewhat expensive. Its stunning juvenile colours and active nature quickly made it a sought-after display species for intermediate keepers.2

Owner questions the things everyone asks

How often should I feed my Amazon Sapphire Pinktoe?

Adults enjoy one medium to large insect every 7 to 14 days, while growing slings need smaller prey more often. Furry Diary's starting plan suggests adjusting based on your tarantula's size and moult stage. Always check the food label and ask your vet for precise amounts.152 Furry Diary plan

What does an Amazon Sapphire Pinktoe eat, and what should it never eat?

This tarantula is insectivorous and thrives on crickets, roaches, and locusts where legal. It should never eat anything other than suitable insects, but specific unsafe foods vary; please consult your exotic-pet vet for a complete list.152

How much space does an Amazon Sapphire Pinktoe need?

An adult needs a tall, well-ventilated arboreal enclosure at least 30 x 30 x 45 cm. This gives plenty of room for climbing, webbing, and redecorating, which this active species loves.152

What temperature, light or water does an Amazon Sapphire Pinktoe need?

Keep the temperature between 70 and 80 °F (21, 27 °C) with moderate to high humidity of 65, 75%. Provide a water dish that can be reached without damaging the web, and mist occasionally. Furry Diary's plan suggests checking humidity and the water dish every two days. No special lighting is needed.152 Furry Diary plan

How often should I clean an Amazon Sapphire Pinktoe's home?

Spot clean leftover food weekly, and change the substrate every six months. Keep the enclosure clean and dry between mistings to maintain good ventilation.14 Furry Diary plan

Can an Amazon Sapphire Pinktoe live with others?

No, this tarantula is strictly solitary and must be housed alone. Cohabitation can lead to cannibalism, so a single occupant is best.2

How long does an Amazon Sapphire Pinktoe live?

Lifespan ranges from 3 to 14 years, with females generally living longer than males. With proper care, you can enjoy this beautiful tarantula for many years.452

Can I handle an Amazon Sapphire Pinktoe?

Handling is not recommended because this tarantula is fast, skittish, and prone to jumping. It prefers to flee or hide, and may flick hairs or bite if cornered. Enjoy watching it from a safe distance.457
