Looks how to spot one

scales

A sleek, long-tailed lizard with a large head and powerful jaws. The body is covered in small, granular scales. Males are far more colourful than females, often showing bright turquoise, green, yellow or orange on the body and head. Females are usually muted brown or grey, but during breeding season they develop bright orange spots on the head. Both sexes have two distinctive black bands around the neck, like a collar.26

Personality what they are like

Eastern collared lizards are alert, quick and can be flighty, especially if wild-caught. Captive-bred individuals calm down well and can become tame enough for gentle handling, though they are never as relaxed as bearded dragons. They are territorial, especially males, and will chase off rivals. With patience they often learn to hand-feed, which builds trust.16

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Diurnal and very active. They need a large enclosure (at least 120 cm long) with plenty of rocks, ledges and hiding spots to climb and bask. They are one of the fastest lizards in short bursts and need space to run. A basking spot of around 38-40°C and strong UVB lighting are essential.178

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Low grooming needs. Provide a shallow water bowl for drinking and occasional soaking. Spot-clean the enclosure regularly. Watch for retained shed, especially on toes and tail tip. A dry, arid substrate such as sand-soil mix or specialised reptile bedding works well. A 12-hour light cycle with a timer helps maintain a natural rhythm.81

Home where they are happiest

A dry, rocky environment mimicking limestone or granite glades. A large vivarium (minimum 120x45x45 cm for a single adult) with a high basking temperature (38-40°C), strong UVB, and a cooler end around 26-28°C. Provide rock piles, crevices and a deep substrate for burrowing. They overwinter in burrows in the wild, so a cooling period may be beneficial for breeding. Not a species for a small tank.167

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Obligate carnivore. Feed a variety of live insects: crickets, locusts, grasshoppers, mealworms, waxworms, dubia roaches, silkworms and earthworms. Adults eat 2-3 times per week, juveniles more often. Dust insects with calcium and vitamin supplements. They may also eat small lizards or snakes in the wild, but this is not needed in captivity.218

Company who they like around

Can be kept alone or in a pair (one male with one or more females). Never house two males together as they are highly territorial and will fight. During breeding, males can injure females, so watch for wounds and separate if needed. They are not a social species and do not need company. Handling should be brief and gentle to avoid stress.16

The story where it all began

The eastern collared lizard has been kept in captivity for decades, particularly in the United States and Europe. It is one of nine species of collared lizard and the most commonly bred in the pet trade. Wild-caught individuals were once common, but captive-bred stock is now widely available, producing calmer, healthier animals. Its vivid colours and active nature have made it a popular choice for intermediate reptile keepers.17

Owner questions the things everyone asks

How often should I feed my Eastern Collared Lizard?

Adult Eastern Collared Lizards do well with feeding 2 to 3 times a week, while growing juveniles need more frequent meals. Furry Diary's starting plan suggests feeding as often as your lizard's age and species require, and always dust insects with calcium and vitamins as your vet advises. Watch your lizard's body condition and adjust if needed.218 Furry Diary plan

What does an Eastern Collared Lizard eat, and what should it never eat?

They are obligate carnivores, so feed a variety of live insects like crickets, locusts, mealworms, dubia roaches, and silkworms. They should never eat plant matter, fruits, or vegetables, and while they might eat small lizards in the wild, that is not needed in captivity. Always dust insects with calcium and vitamin supplements as your vet recommends.218

How much space does an Eastern Collared Lizard need?

A single adult needs a large vivarium at least 120 cm long, 45 cm wide, and 45 cm tall. They are very active and fast, so plenty of room to run and climb with rocks, ledges, and hiding spots is essential. A small tank will not meet their needs.167

What temperature, light or water does an Eastern Collared Lizard need?

Provide a basking spot at 38 to 40°C and a cooler end around 26 to 28°C, with strong UVB lighting on a 12-hour cycle. A shallow water bowl should always be available for drinking and occasional soaking. Furry Diary's plan includes checking temperatures daily and replacing UVB bulbs every 6 months.178 Furry Diary plan

How often should I clean an Eastern Collared Lizard's home?

Spot-clean the enclosure every day to remove waste and uneaten food. A full clean, including changing substrate and disinfecting, is recommended once a month. Furry Diary's plan also suggests a monthly weigh-in to keep an eye on health.81 Furry Diary plan

Can an Eastern Collared Lizard live with others?

They can be kept alone or as a pair with one male and one or more females, but never house two males together as they are highly territorial and will fight. During breeding, watch for injuries and separate if needed. They are not a social species and do not need company.16

How long does an Eastern Collared Lizard live?

With good care, they can live between 5 and 15 years. Providing the right enclosure, diet, and regular vet check-ups helps them reach the upper end of that range. Furry Diary suggests an annual vet visit with an exotic-pet specialist.415 Furry Diary plan

Can I handle an Eastern Collared Lizard?

Captive-bred individuals can become tame enough for gentle handling, but they are never as relaxed as bearded dragons and can be flighty. Handle briefly and gently to avoid stress, and build trust through hand-feeding. Wild-caught lizards are much more nervous and harder to tame.16
