Looks how to spot one

Smooth skin with a flat, leaf-like tail and spiny scales above the eyes that look like eyelashes

This gecko has a long, slender body and a broad, flattened tail that helps it blend in with leaves and bamboo. Its skin is smooth and lacks the fringed edges seen in some other leaf-tailed geckos, but it does have tiny spiny scales above the eyes that give the appearance of eyelashes. The head is somewhat snake-like.3

Personality what they are like

Lined leaf-tailed geckos are peaceful and secretive. They rely on stillness and camouflage rather than aggression. They are delicate and easily stressed by handling, so they are best kept as display animals. They may drop their tail if frightened.54

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Nocturnal and arboreal. They need a tall enclosure with plenty of vertical branches and bamboo for climbing. They are most active at night and spend the day resting motionless on leaves or branches.35

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Minimal grooming needed. They obtain water by licking droplets from misted leaves. The enclosure should be misted daily to maintain high humidity and provide drinking water. Avoid handling to prevent stress and tail loss.52

Home where they are happiest

A tall, well-ventilated terrarium at least 45 x 45 x 90 cm (18 x 18 x 36 inches) for one adult. Temperature 21-27°C (70-80°F) with a slight drop at night. Humidity above 70%. Provide vertical bamboo branches, live plants like Dracaena or Pothos, and a substrate that holds moisture. UVB lighting is beneficial.423

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Insectivorous. Feed on gut-loaded crickets and Dubia roaches. Adults eat 2-3 adult crickets twice a week; juveniles eat 3-4 small crickets three times a week. Dust with calcium and multivitamin supplements regularly.23

Company who they like around

Can be kept singly or in breeding pairs/trios. They are not social and do not need company. Handling should be avoided as it causes stress. They are best observed rather than touched.54

The story where it all began

The lined leaf-tailed gecko was first described in 1836 by Duméril and Bibron. It is native to the rainforests and bamboo forests of eastern Madagascar. In the pet trade, it is less common than some other geckos and is considered a species for experienced keepers due to its specific care needs and sensitivity. Deforestation and illegal collection for the pet trade are threats to wild populations.16
