scales

The rhinoceros iguana has rough, bumpy scales that are usually greyish-brown or olive, helping it blend into its rocky surroundings. Its most distinctive feature is the bony, horn-like bump on its snout, which gives it the name 'rhinoceros'. It also has a crest of pointed scales running from the back of its neck to the tip of its tail.51

Personality what they are like

Rhinoceros iguanas are generally calm and can become very tame, often enjoying gentle handling and even appearing to seek attention. However, they are sensitive to their surroundings and can have moody days. When frightened or cornered, they may bite or whip their strong tail, and their claws can scratch. Overall, they are considered one of the more docile large lizards.14

Daily activity how busy a day looks

These iguanas are diurnal and need plenty of space to move, bask, and explore. They are heliothermic, meaning they rely on sunlight to regulate body temperature, so a proper heat gradient with a basking spot is essential. An outdoor enclosure is ideal, but indoor setups must include UVB lighting and a heat lamp.32

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Rhinoceros iguanas need a clean, spacious enclosure with a temperature gradient (basking area around 35-40°C and cooler areas around 25-30°C). UVB lighting is crucial for calcium metabolism. They also require a shallow water dish for drinking and soaking. Their claws may need occasional trimming if they become too long.43

Home where they are happiest

A minimum enclosure size for an adult is 8 feet long by 4 feet wide by 4 feet tall. Outdoor housing is preferred when possible. The enclosure must provide hiding spots, climbing branches, and a basking area. Substrate can be newspaper, reptile carpet, or soil. They are endangered and protected in their native range; keeping them may be restricted in some countries, so check local laws.426

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Rhinoceros iguanas are primarily herbivorous. Their diet should consist of at least 95% plant material, mainly leafy greens, with some vegetables and small amounts of fruit. They may occasionally eat insects or other small animals, but this should be limited. Fresh water must always be available.23

Company who they like around

These iguanas are territorial and generally solitary. They can be housed alone, and males may fight if kept together. They are not venomous, but they are an endangered species; in some countries it is illegal to keep them without permits. Always check local regulations before acquiring one.56

The story where it all began

The rhinoceros iguana has been known to science since the late 18th century, first described by Bonnaterre in 1789. It has long been kept in zoos and by private reptile enthusiasts, though it remains uncommon in the pet trade due to its endangered status and specific care needs. Captive breeding programmes exist to help conserve the species.74

Owner questions the things everyone asks

How often should I feed my Rhinoceros Iguana?

Furry Diary's starting plan notes that feeding frequency depends on the species and age, so it's best to ask your vet for a schedule tailored to your iguana. Young iguanas may need daily meals, while adults can be fed every other day. Always provide fresh water daily. Furry Diary plan

What does a Rhinoceros Iguana eat, and what should it never eat?

These iguanas are primarily herbivorous, so their diet should be at least 95% plant material like leafy greens, vegetables, and small amounts of fruit. They may occasionally eat insects, but this should be limited. For specific foods to avoid, ask your vet or a good breeder, as individual needs can vary.32

How much space does a Rhinoceros Iguana need?

An adult needs a minimum enclosure of 8 feet long by 4 feet wide by 4 feet tall, with outdoor housing preferred when possible. The enclosure should include hiding spots, climbing branches, and a basking area. Always check local regulations, as they are an endangered species and may require permits.426

What temperature, light or water does a Rhinoceros Iguana need?

Provide a temperature gradient with a basking area around 35-40°C and cooler areas around 25-30°C. UVB lighting is crucial for calcium metabolism, and a shallow water dish should always be available for drinking and soaking. Furry Diary's plan suggests checking temperatures daily and changing UVB bulbs every 6 months.43 Furry Diary plan

How often should I clean a Rhinoceros Iguana's home?

Spot clean daily to remove waste and uneaten food, and perform a full clean of the enclosure once a month. Furry Diary's plan includes these steps to keep your iguana healthy. Always use safe cleaning products and rinse thoroughly. Furry Diary plan
