Looks how to spot one

feathers

Males are brilliantly coloured with a metallic blue head and neck, a fan-shaped crest, and an enormous train of elongated upper-tail coverts decorated with iridescent eyespots. Females are mostly brown with a white face and green lower neck, and lack the long train.1

Personality what they are like

Indian peafowl are generally wary and independent, though hand-raised birds can become calm around people. They are not cuddly and can be territorial during breeding season. Their loud calls, especially at dawn and dusk, may disturb neighbours.452

Daily activity how busy a day looks

They need plenty of space to walk, scratch, forage and make short flights. A cramped pen causes stress and feather damage. They roost in trees or on high perches.45

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Provide secure outdoor housing with dry footing, strong predator protection, and elevated roosts. Free-ranging increases risks from vehicles, dogs and disease. Eggs hatch after 28-30 days of incubation at 99.5-100.5°F and 50-60% humidity.46

Home where they are happiest

A large outdoor aviary or farm-style enclosure with secure fencing, dry ground, and high perches. They are not suited to indoor life. In some introduced areas they are considered a nuisance due to noise and mess.42

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Omnivorous: seeds, grains, fruits, berries, insects, small reptiles and rodents. In captivity they eat commercial poultry feed supplemented with greens and protein. They can damage crops like peanuts and tomatoes.17

Company who they like around

They live in small groups and do best in pairs or small flocks. They can be territorial and may chase smaller birds. Mixed-species flocks need careful management.4

The story where it all began

Native to the Indian subcontinent, the Indian peafowl has been admired for thousands of years. It was introduced to Mesopotamia and Palestine around the 10th century BCE, reached Greece by the late 6th century BCE, and later spread across Europe and the world. In India it is protected by religious sentiment and is a familiar sight in villages and towns. Today it is kept as an ornamental bird on farms, in aviaries, and as specialty backyard poultry.21

Owner questions the things everyone asks

Provide fresh food and water daily. Furry Diary's starting plan suggests daily fresh food and water. For exact amounts, check the food label and ask your vet.17 Furry Diary plan

What does an Indian Peafowl eat, and what should it never eat?

They eat seeds, grains, fruits, berries, insects, and small animals. In captivity, commercial poultry feed with greens and protein is good. Never give them avocado, chocolate, grapes, raisins, onion, garlic, or any foods from the ASPCA toxic list.178

They need plenty of space to walk, scratch, forage, and make short flights. A cramped pen causes stress and feather damage. For exact size, ask a good breeder or exotic-pet vet.45

What shelter or housing does an Indian Peafowl need?

Provide a large outdoor aviary or farm-style enclosure with secure fencing, dry ground, and high perches for roosting. It must have strong predator protection and not be indoors.426

How often should I clean an Indian Peafowl's home?

Furry Diary's starting plan suggests a spot clean daily and a full clean every 30 days, with a mite check every 14 days. Adjust based on your setup and ask your vet. Furry Diary plan
