Personality what they are like

This tarantula is extremely defensive, skittish and fast. It will strike a threatening pose, slap the ground, and bite readily if disturbed. It has no urticating hairs, so its first line of defence is its fangs. Handling is strongly discouraged, even for experienced keepers.325

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Nocturnal and fossorial. It spends nearly all its time in deep burrows and only emerges at night to hunt. In captivity it needs deep substrate to dig and a dark, quiet environment.12

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Very low grooming needs. The enclosure must be spot-cleaned monthly. Substrate should be kept slightly moist to maintain humidity. A shallow water dish with fresh water must always be available. Misting the enclosure daily helps keep humidity high.35

Home where they are happiest

A secure 5-10 gallon glass terrarium with a tight, escape-proof lid. Deep, moist substrate (at least 10-15 cm) for burrowing. Humidity 70-82%, temperature around 24-28°C. A heating pad placed under the tank can help maintain warmth. This species is not suitable for beginners due to its defensive nature and medically significant venom. It is not illegal to keep in most countries, but local laws should be checked.352

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Insectivore. Feeds on crickets, cockroaches, locusts, mealworms, moths, and occasionally small pinky mice. Adults eat about 5 crickets per week; remove any uneaten prey. Spiderlings should be fed twice a week with appropriately sized insects.35

Company who they like around

Solitary and highly territorial. Must be housed alone. It is not a social animal and does not benefit from company. Its venom is medically significant and can cause intense pain, swelling and muscle cramping; people allergic to bee stings should be especially cautious. Handling is never recommended.32

The story where it all began

The cobalt blue tarantula was first described scientifically in 1996 by Smith under the name Cyriopagopus lividus, though it was later placed in the genus Haplopelma before being returned to Cyriopagopus. It originates from the tropical rainforests of Myanmar, Thailand and neighbouring countries. Its stunning blue colour made it highly sought after in the pet trade, but its aggressive temperament and potent venom quickly established it as a species only for advanced keepers. Today it is bred in captivity worldwide and remains a popular display animal for experienced arachnid enthusiasts.162
