Looks how to spot one
Feathers
A light, elegant bird with a slender build. Both sexes carry a forward-pointing crest of feathers on the head, and instead of a regular comb they have two small horn-like points. The face is clean with very small wattles, which helps prevent frostbite in cold weather.15
Personality what they are like
These chickens are lively and alert, but they can be a bit flighty and nervous. They are not the cuddliest breed and may not suit young children, but they are curious and enjoy exploring. They are independent and prefer to roam freely rather than be confined.62
Daily activity how busy a day looks
They need plenty of space and do best with free range. They are strong fliers and will roost in trees if given the chance, so a covered run or clipped wings may be necessary. They are excellent foragers and will happily search for food.62
Grooming and care the hands-on bits
Feathers generally need little care, but check the crest for dirt or mites. Provide a secure coop for night-time, and if they roost in trees, train them to use the coop. Protect them from predators, as their small size makes them vulnerable.65
Home where they are happiest
They need a spacious, secure enclosure with a covered run to prevent flying out. They are cold-hardy but also tolerate heat. Provide perches and shelter from predators. They are not suited to close confinement.16
Food basics what goes in the bowl
They are excellent foragers and will find much of their own food, including grass, seeds and insects. Supplement with high-protein pellets and calcium-rich grit, especially for laying hens. In winter, scatter extra feed to help them forage.4
Company who they like around
They are social birds and do best in a flock. They are active and curious, but can be flighty, so gentle handling from a young age helps. They are not typically aggressive, but may be wary of humans.6
The story where it all began
The Appenzeller Spitzhauben comes from the Appenzell region of Switzerland, where it has been bred for centuries, possibly since the 1600s. It was kept by monks and later by local farmers, valued for its hardiness and egg production. By the mid-20th century it was nearly extinct, but a recovery project in the 1980s helped save it. It was imported to other countries in the 1950s and later, and today it is still rare, especially in North America.12
